New Zoo Revue Lessons

Phonics for Your Preschooler Presented by The New Zoo Revue® – the award-winning kids’ show With Freddie the Frog

Program Overview

Phonics With Freddie is a step-by-step, developmentally aligned phonics program designed for preschoolers beginning as early as age 2. The program builds strong prereading foundations through listening, speaking, rhythm, rhyme, and sound awareness—preparing children for confident reading success.

What Is Synthetic Phonics?

Synthetic phonics is a structured approach that teaches children to:

  • Match written letters to spoken sounds

  • Blend sounds together to read words

  • Understand what they are reading

This internationally recognized method helps children “crack the code” of reading by learning how sounds combine to form words.

What Comes Before Phonics (and Why It Matters)

Before formal phonics instruction, children must develop essential prereading skills, including:

  • Identifying similarities and differences in shapes

  • Hearing and saying sounds clearly

  • Remembering sounds in sequence

  • Understanding spoken language

Reading develops step-by-step, just like learning to walk or talk. Skipping these foundations can lead to later reading difficulties.

The Freddie Phonics Learning Path

The program follows a clear progression by age and stage:

Ages 2–3: Phonics Foundations (Stages 1–2)

Children develop:

  • Auditory discrimination and memory

  • Visual discrimination and memory

  • Clear speech sounds

  • Language play through songs, stories, and games

Focus: Listening, sound matching, rhythm, and rhyme

Ages 3–4: Language & Sound Awareness (Stages 3–4)

Children learn:

  • Syllables through rhythmic play

  • Rhyming and sound patterns

  • Early phonemic awareness

  • Symbols matched to sounds

Focus: Preparing the brain for reading

Ages 4–5: Reading with Phonics (Stages 5–6)

Children begin:

  • Blending sounds to read words

  • Reading simple sentences

  • Building confidence as readers

Focus: Reading success through structured phonics

Why Music, Rhythm, and Animals Are Used

  • Songs strengthen memory and sound recall

  • Rhythm builds syllable awareness

  • Animal characters make sounds meaningful and memorable

  • Repetition builds confidence and motivation

Learning is most effective when it is fun, engaging, and emotionally positive.

Key Phonics Skills Children Develop

  • Phonological awareness (syllables, rhyme)

  • Phonemic awareness (individual sounds)

  • Oral blending (combining sounds into words)

  • Saying “pure sounds” without added vowels

  • Left-to-right reading direction

Teaching Philosophy

  • Short, playful, repeatable activities

  • Multi-sensory learning (see it, hear it, say it)

  • Confidence before speed

  • Repetition without pressure

Children learn best when they feel successful.

Key Milestones Checklist

Children are ready to progress when they can:

  • Match sounds to objects and pictures

  • Join in with songs, rhymes, and rhythms

  • Identify syllables and rhyming words
